I take no joy in saying that our president is a threat to our national health. His disregard of pandemic guidelines, penchant for dangerous lies, and narcissistic desire to throw super spreader events during this campaign will be looked at by historians as the fatal flaws of his time in office.

As much as I love nerding out and watching every minute like it is game seven of the season finals, I have no problem saying that Americans are saved from another terrible display with a canceled second debate.

If you believed the first debate was a dumpster fire, the second debate would have even uglier. Whether on stage or in a virtual town hall, it was destined to be an absolute disaster. It would not have served its purpose to inform the public. It would not have been civil or reflected any dignity. It would have been one more shameful moment in a litany of lows.

I have called for all three debates to occur as scheduled, solely because that is how it has been almost every election cycle in modern history. But these are not normal times, and we must not treat these debates as such. Handing Trump a national platform to spew his dangerous disinformation and untethered lies is a threat to our democracy we cannot allow.

Combine the lies he told with the blatant disregard shown by his family for the health of those around them in the first debate and we can definitively conclude that Trump does not deserve any more chances in the spotlight. His utter lack of respect for the process, for the people who produce the debates, and for Americans everywhere could not be more clear.

If the last four years have taught us anything, it is that Trump sets himself before all else. At the end of the day, that is how it is with the president. It remains Trump before party, before country, and before morality.

We do not need another debate to see that our institutions have been turned into spectacles. We do not need another debate to see that the president is not up to the task to lead a weary public. We do not need another debate to see this experiment has failed. No debate can save Trump. We know what he stands for, and we know what he wants. We need no further information about him. We simply need to vote.
